I want to talk to you about sticking to your agenda. It’s really important in life that we have an agenda, we have objectives, we have goals that we’re going for. You see if the brain doesn’t know what we’re going for, it’s very easy for it to get pulled from pillar to post onto other people’s agendas. Everyone would always want a piece of you, everyone would want some of your time or want some of your energy or some of your focus and we often find ourselves getting buffered through life on other people’s demands, other people’s agendas, however if we want to be successful, if we want to achieve anything really of any substance out of life, we need to stick to our own agendas.
First of all, we need to have our goals, have our objectives and then we need to be really disciplined with making sure that we stick to our agenda. What I want to do today is give you really simple process that you can do on a daily basis that keeps you adhering to your own agenda. Number one of course, you need to have goals, you need to have objectives. Each day, in the morning what you want to do is set out your day plan, and your day plan should look something like this; you want to have a list of the current projects that you’re working on, the current goals that you’re working towards.
Then what you want to do is you want to have a list of people that you’re waiting to hear back on, people who are going to help you move your projects forward, help you move your goals forward, help you move your agenda forward. These are the people you either left messages for, you may have send emails out to them, whatever it might be, you need them to do something for you in order for you to move forward. So, what you want to do is have a list of those, you then want to have a list of people you need to reach out too today who are ultimately going to help you move forward with your goals as well.
Then what you want to do is have a list of your top priorities today that are going to move you forward. This could be one, two, three, four, five maybe ten things whatever it might be, and these are your list of commitments for today that are going to move you forward on your goals and on your objectives. Here’s the discipline part before you get caught up in anyone’s else’s agenda, before you get caught up in anyone else’s demands or request of your time or your energy, you need to make sure you do those three things first and foremost.
Firstly, go and check, have the people you’re waiting on contacted you? If they haven’t then are you going to reach out to them today or are you going to reach out tomorrow? If you’re going to reach out to them tomorrow or the next day, then you put them into your diary plan for the next two, three, four days next week whatever it is. If you’re going to reach out to them today, you put them over to the list of people you’re going to contact today. You then go out and contact everyone you need to contact today okay, and then obviously when you leave messages for them for example or if you send an email to them, then of course their name goes back onto the expecting to hear back from list.
Then what you do is you go out and tackle your first one, two or three top priorities for the day to move your goals, move your life, move your business forward. Once you’ve done those then you can give your time to other things. You’ve got a bigger to do list, I’m sure that you can work on, so now you can start doing all the other things that you need to do, but also this is where you can start to do what other people requesting from you. There will be people who are waiting for you to get back to them on certain things that will help their agenda along and I’m not here saying that you shouldn’t work on other people’s agenda, that you shouldn’t help people out – of course you should, it’s just making sure you do it on your terms.
So, this is the time now when you would be reactive. You would answer all the questions that are being asked of us, or the people who want something for us, but in that is the real discipline. Start off with who I’m waiting for, who am I going to reach out to, what are my top one, two, three, four priorities for today, make sure you do those, and make sure they’re in alignment with those top lying goals and those objectives, or projects that you’re working on and you will be far more effective, you’ll be far more efficient in terms of use of your time and energy and you will be sticking to your own agenda and you’ll be achieving way more, way more. I’ll tell you now it’s less stressful and you still will get to help everybody else as well, it’s just on your terms not necessarily on their terms.
So, if you want to de-stress plus become much more effective then I urge you to apply a simple day planning strategy just like that.
Until next time, be successful.
